Increase in use of antidepressants in young
More and more young Swedes use tranquilizers and antidepressant drugs. The number of people between ages 20 and 24 who have at least once during the past year taken out a prescription for a tranquilizer has increased with over 70% between 2006 and 2012, according to SVT.
For antidepressants it’s a 50% increase, according to statistics from the independent foundation NEPI, Nätverk för läkemedelsepidemiologi. Mikael Hoffman, director of NEPI, says to SVT that more and more antidepressants have been approved of during the past years.

“That means it’s only natural that people use more of them. And when you use more of them, then it’s first and foremost those who did not have pronounced symptoms to begin with. The question you ask is how are things with those who are most ill? They receive many of these drugs in combinations. In order to answer the question how they are doing, a deeper analysis is needed,” says Hoffman.
